Opportunities Shaping the Chemical Industry

India’s chemical industry is on the cusp of a transformative growth phase, supported by strong macroeconomic fundamentals and robust demand. Over the past decade, the sector has expanded significantly, driven by increasing consumption, industrialisation, and regulatory support. Favourable policies, competitive labour costs, cost-efficient manufacturing, and thrust on sustainability and innovation, position India as a key player in the global chemical landscape.

Accounting for nearly 7% of India’s GDP, the chemical industry remains a crucial pillar of the country’s economic growth. Increasing investments, rising consumption across end-use industries, and a supportive regulatory environment will support the sector’s growth, expected to reach $300 billion by 2025.

MAJOR TRENDS AND GROWTH DRIVERS
RISING DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION

India’s chemical industry plays a vital role in supporting multiple end-user industries, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, automotive, electronics, construction, and more. Nearly 70% of India’s chemical production is consumed domestically. Over the next two decades, India is poised to account for 20% of global chemical consumption, with domestic demand expected to reach $850-1,000 billion by 2040.

FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is becoming a key catalyst for India’s chemical industry. Manufacturers are increasingly adopting sustainable practices and processes to cater to evolving customer preferences. The industry is also witnessing a shift towards health-conscious, environmentally responsible products, further accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices.

EVOLVING SUPPLY CHAINS

Amid shifting geopolitical dynamics, global manufacturers are looking to diversify and derisk their supply chains. India, with its compelling value proposition, including low manufacturing costs, skilled workforce and natural resources, and growing focus on sustainable practices throughout the supply chain, makes it a trusted partner in the global value chain.

POLICY SUPPORT

Favourable government initiatives such as ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ aim to promote self-reliance and reduce import dependence, strengthening the sector’s growth trajectory. Policies like production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes and Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) projects further propel manufacturing competitiveness and the growth of the chemical industry.

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS

Technology plays a crucial role in the growth of the chemical industry. Trends such as advanced analytics, cloud computing, big data, AI, IoT, digital twins, blockchain, AR, VR and data-driven product development are gaining prominence. The adoption of smart manufacturing technologies helps in real-time monitoring and control of production processes, optimises resource utilisation, and minimises waste, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.
